Fraudsters leverage this excitement to target unsuspecting individuals with fake IPL betting applications and deceptive fantasy league platforms. The modus operandi is often multi-faceted and designed to appear legitimate. It typically begins with alluring advertisements on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram, or direct messages on WhatsApp and Telegram. These ads promise incredible returns on IPL match betting, often boasting "fixed matches," "inside information," or "expert tips" guaranteeing wins. They direct potential victims to download malicious apps, often mimicking popular betting platforms, or to visit expertly crafted fake websites. Upon registration, victims are asked to deposit an initial sum, typically ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹50,000, for 'VIP membership,' 'premium access,' or to get those 'guaranteed tips.' The scammers might even allow the victim to win small amounts initially, building trust and encouraging larger investments. This initial "win" is a classic bait tactic. They might show a positive balance on the fake app or website, making the victim believe their investment is growing. Once the victim attempts to withdraw their 'winnings,' the real scam begins. Suddenly, withdrawal requests are blocked. Explanations range from "technical issues," "KYC verification pending," to "unforeseen taxes" or "large transaction fees" that require *another* deposit. The fraudsters exert pressure, claiming that if the victim doesn't pay these additional charges, their entire balance will be forfeited. This creates a cycle of deposits, with the victim constantly chasing their original investment and perceived winnings, only to lose more money. These scam apps often demand extensive permissions on your phone, potentially allowing access to your contacts, messages, and even banking app details. They might also pressure you to share sensitive personal information like Aadhaar details or bank account numbers under the guise of KYC compliance, which can then be used for identity theft or further financial fraud. The communication often happens through encrypted platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram, making it harder to trace the perpetrators.
